West of Pickstown

The western terminus of SD state highway 46 is Pickstown, SD. Where it ends, a federal highway with two numbers (18 and 281) take over. Westwardly from Pickstown, this highway takes travelers across the Fort Randall Dam, which amazingly is 2 miles across. Just west of the dam, you’ll come to a scenic overlook. This painting is a view from that overlook, looking south. I came to that overlook as I was driving through rain to the Sand Hills Golf Course one early August morning in 2020. The clouds were low and moving quickly. I took dozens of pics as the clouds and light kept changing. Three years later, I painted this scene from my reference pics. This painting hung at the Minnehaha Country Club as part of its first annual Art Masters Exhibit. The club auctioned this piece during its “Evening with the Art Masters” in May 2024. Ron and Beth Parsons won the bid.

2023. Oil on Canvas. 48 by 50 inches.
