Legion Lake

In 2019, my wife, Diane, and I spent a night in a cabin at the Legion Lake Lodge Resort, Custer State Park, Black Hills of  SD. This painting shows a view across Legion Lake as seen during an early morning walk. Sometimes a scene touches my soul, and I can’t explain why. This is one of those scenes. Maybe its special due to the juxtaposition of the flowing curves of solid rock echoed by the flowing curves of the ponderosa pines. Maybe it's special due to the shades of yellow and bright green opposite the complementary blues of the rock and water reflections. No matter the reasons, the scene just moves me. Four years after seeing it, I created this painting for the second annual Art Masters Exhibit at the  Minnehaha Country Club. The club auctioned this piece during its “Evening with the Art Masters” in May 2024. Dan and Andrea Smith won the bid.

2024. Oil on Canvas. 51 by 52 inches.
