Black Elk View 1 & 2

2020. Oil on Canvas. 26 by 60 inches. (Right)

My friend, Jon Piper of Piper Arts (27th and Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls), had a spare canvas of an odd size. He gave it me and encouraged me to paint something for him to market and sell through his gallery. I went back to my “SD West Folder” containing hundreds of pics, and I assembled this composition. Black Elk Peak is in the upper left. This piece hung in Piper Arts for about one day before it sold. Unfortunately, I can’t remember who bought it.

Emily’s Hope is a Sioux Falls-based non-profit “dedicated to removing the stigma of substance use disorder through awareness, education, and prevention.” Each year in late January, Executive Director Angela Kennecke and her team host a gala, an art show and auction to raise funds and awareness. For each of the past several galas, I donated a piece. This was my donation in 2023. To create it, I pulled together my favorite parts from several resource photos. I do not know who bought this piece at the auction.
