Foremost Dairy
1983. Watercolor on Paper. 8 by 10 inches.
I painted this scene because I liked the light and composition. However, I am proud that it’s a reminder of an interesting chapter in Sioux Falls’ history. In 1874, the Sioux Falls Brewing Company started operations at this site, 801 N. Main. In 1904, the company constructed this castle-like building. In 1912, the company sold the building to Crescent Creamery. In 1953, Crescent Creamery sold to Foremost Dairy, and dairy operations ceased in 1974. In 1987, the building burned to the ground. Clyde Twiggs, the only person living in the “old castle” at that time, was out-of-town when the fire occurred. He was well-known for owning and running a downtown hot dog stand. In 1983, I donated this painting to the Sioux Falls Civic Art Center “Arts Night” auction. I don’t recall who bought it.
