Rock Island Depot
2000. Watercolor on Paper. 11 by 20 inches.
I created this piece for the Washington Pavilion “Arts Night,” which became known as “The Gala” about 20 years later. This building was constructed in 1886 by the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railway, and later became part of the Rock Island Railroad network. After the railroad line was discontinued in 1970, the depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Later it was used for other purposes, including as a restaurant and as offices of Midland National Life Insurance. It became The Great Outdoor Store in 2009. Officials of Midland National Life Insurance Company purchased the painting at the “Arts Night” auction. Midland became Sammons Financial, and this piece now hangs in the Sammons offices in southwest Sioux Falls.
